Nutty Putty Cave was a popular, but very narrow and complex, cave system located about 55 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. It was known for its tight passages and unusual geological formations. The cave was a popular destination for recreational caving, attracting both experienced and novice cavers.
Tragically, in November 2009, a caver named John Jones became trapped in a very narrow, unexplored passage within the cave. Despite extensive rescue efforts, which lasted for 27 hours, rescuers were unable to extract him. Jones ultimately died from compression asphyxia.
Following the tragic incident, the Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration, which owned the land, permanently sealed the cave with concrete in 2010, entombing Jones' body within. This action was taken both to prevent future accidents and to honor the family's wishes.
The cave is now permanently closed and inaccessible. It serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of cave exploration and the importance of caution and preparation when entering such environments. The incident also sparked debate about cave management and the responsibility of landowners regarding public safety.
